- Play Integrity API (Android only) — Google's service to verify the app is running on a legitimate device. See Google's Privacy Policy.
- Firebase App Check — Verifies requests come from your legitimate app, not external scripts or bots.
These services may send limited usage data to Google but do not reveal your personal information.
2. How We Use Your Information
We use your information to:
- Provide the App — Store and sync your shelf, watchlist, and profile across devices; retrieve your data when you open the app
- Authenticate You — Verify your identity and maintain your session via Google Sign-In
- Enable Offline Use — Cache your data locally so you can access it without internet
- Power Social Features — Show your public profile to other users, display your activity in the Friends Feed, and enable following
- Generate Statistics — Calculate reading streaks, total items read, time spent reading, and achievement badges
- Provide Search and Discovery — Query external APIs (AniList, etc.) with your search terms to find titles to add to your shelf/watchlist
- Improve the App — Analyze aggregate usage patterns and errors to fix bugs and improve features
- Security and Abuse Prevention — Detect and prevent unauthorized access, spam, and misuse of the service
- Comply with Law — Respond to legal requests from law enforcement
3. What We Do NOT Do
- We do not sell or rent your personal data to third parties
- We do not use your data for targeted advertising
- We do not share your shelf or watchlist with advertisers or marketing partners
- We do not use your reading preferences to build profiles for sale
- We do not use cookies or tracking pixels for analytics (except Firebase analytics, which is anonymized)
- We do not share your email address with anyone except for essential service providers
4. Third-Party Services and Data Sharing
ComicShelf uses the following third-party services. Your data may be processed by these services:
4.1 Firebase (Google LLC)
Your shelf, watchlist, profile, activity, and social data are stored in Google Cloud Firestore (Firebase's cloud database). Firebase includes:
- Authentication (Google Sign-In)
- Cloud Firestore (database)
- Cloud Storage (for media, if used)
- Firebase Analytics (anonymized usage data)
- Firebase App Check (bot prevention)
See Firebase Privacy Policy and Google Privacy Policy.
4.2 Content Discovery APIs
When you search for titles, your search queries and requests are sent to:
- Open Movie Database (OMDB) — Your search terms are sent to OMDB's API to retrieve movie and TV show information. See OMDB's terms.
- AniList GraphQL API — Your search terms for anime, manga, manhwa, and webtoons are sent to AniList. See AniList Privacy.
- Open Library API — Your book and comic searches are sent to Open Library. See Open Library API docs.
- Google Books API — As a fallback for book searches. See Google Privacy Policy.
These APIs receive your search queries but typically do not receive your personal information (name, email, etc.). Each service's privacy practices are governed by their own policies.
4.3 Hosting and Deployment
Vercel hosts the web version of ComicShelf. Access logs and basic usage metrics may be stored by Vercel. See Vercel Privacy Policy.
4.4 Analytics
Firebase Analytics collects anonymized app usage data (feature usage, crash reports, performance metrics). This data is not tied to your personal identity. See Google Privacy Policy.
5. Public Profiles and Social Data
If you enable a public profile, the following information becomes visible to any signed-in ComicShelf user:
- Display name, username, bio, and avatar
- All shelf entries and watchlist items
- Reading statistics (items by type, total pages read, ratings breakdown)
- Achievement badges you've earned
- Last 100 activity events (what you've added, completed, rated, etc.)
- Follower and following counts
Your profile is accessible via the URL: comicshelf.online/u/your-username
To make your profile private, go to Settings → Profile → Privacy and toggle off. This immediately hides all of the above information.
6. Data Storage and Encryption
Your data is stored in Google Cloud Firestore, which is encrypted in transit (TLS/SSL) and at rest by default. Passwords are never stored by ComicShelf; authentication is handled entirely by Google.
Your device caches some data locally (covers, avatar, offline sync queue) using browser storage (localStorage/IndexedDB on web) or device file systems (Android). This local cache is not encrypted but remains on your device only.
7. Data Retention and Deletion
7.1 How Long We Keep Your Data
Your data is retained as long as you maintain an active account. Activity logs are automatically trimmed to the 100 most recent events per user; older events are deleted automatically.
7.2 Deleting Individual Items
You can delete individual shelf entries or watchlist items from within the app at any time. Deleted items cannot be recovered.
7.3 Complete Account Deletion
To delete your entire account and all associated data, go to Settings → Account → Delete Account. When you delete your account:
- All your shelf entries, watchlist, profile, activity, badges, and photos are permanently deleted from Firebase
- Your username becomes available for other users to claim
- Your public profile (if public) is no longer accessible
- Your Google Sign-In connection with ComicShelf is disconnected
- This action is irreversible — deleted data cannot be recovered
7.4 Data After Account Deletion
After you delete your account:
- We may retain anonymized aggregate data (e.g., "100 users in July 2026 marked a title as completed") for analytics purposes, but this is not tied to your identity
- Local data cached on your device remains until you manually clear your browser cache or device storage
- Firestore backups may retain your data briefly (usually 24 hours) but it will be purged according to Google's retention policies
8. Data Security
We implement security measures to protect your data, including:
- HTTPS/TLS encryption for all data in transit
- Firebase's built-in encryption at rest
- Authentication via secure Google Sign-In (you never share your password with ComicShelf)
- Firestore Security Rules that restrict access to your data (only you can read/write your data)
- Bot detection (reCAPTCHA and Firebase App Check) to prevent automated abuse
However, no system is 100% secure. We cannot guarantee complete protection against all security threats.
9. Your Rights
You have the following rights regarding your data:
- Access — All your data is visible within the ComicShelf app
- Export — You can export your shelf and watchlist as JSON files
- Correction — You can edit any information you've entered
- Deletion — You can delete individual items or your entire account at any time
- Portability — Exported JSON files are yours to keep and use elsewhere
- Privacy — You can make your profile private at any time
To exercise any of these rights, use the settings within the app or contact us at kyeban19@gmail.com.
10. Offline Functionality
ComicShelf works offline using local data caching:
- Your shelf and watchlist are cached locally on your device
- Changes made offline are queued and synced when you reconnect
- Local caches are automatically cleared when you delete your account or log out
- You cannot access other users' public profiles or the Friends Feed offline
11. Device Permissions (Android)
The Android version of ComicShelf may request the following device permissions:
- Camera — To scan barcodes on book/comic covers (optional)
- File Storage — To import/export JSON data or access downloaded content
- Internet — To sync with Firebase and query APIs
You can revoke these permissions at any time in Android Settings → Apps → ComicShelf → Permissions.
12. Children's Privacy
ComicShelf is not directed at children under 13 and is not designed for children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you are under 13, do not use ComicShelf.
If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided us with personal information, please contact us immediately at kyeban19@gmail.com, and we will delete it.
13. International Data Transfers
Your data is stored in Google Cloud Firestore, which may have servers in multiple countries. By using ComicShelf, you consent to your data being transferred to, stored in, and processed in countries outside your country of residence, including the United States, which may have different data protection laws than your country.
14. Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices or for other operational, legal, or regulatory reasons. If we make material changes to how we collect or use your data, we will:
- Update the effective date at the top of this page
- Notify you via email or within the app if the change significantly affects your privacy
Continued use of ComicShelf after changes are posted constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
